Texas Speaker Dade Phelan Announces Campaign for Re-Election

Beaumont, Texas – Today, Speaker Dade Phelan, a Beaumont Republican, announced he will seek re-election to House District 21 in the Texas House of Representatives. The district covers Jefferson and Orange Counties in Southeast Texas.

Speaker Phelan was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2014. His fellow Representatives selected Phelan to serve as the House Speaker when the Legislature convened in early 2021. Prior to his election as Speaker, Phelan served as Chair of the House Committee on State Affairs, as Vice-Chair of the Natural Resources Committee, and as a member of the Calendars, Appropriations, and Elections Committees.

“Our work during this past session will improve the lives of everyday Texans,” said Speaker Phelan. “The Texas House led on criminal justice reform issues, healthcare affordability, police funding, and addressing winter storm Uri’s long-term impact on our state.

“This was one of the most conservative sessions in our state’s history,” Phelan added. “We passed landmark legislation that protects businesses, taxpayers, the unborn, religious freedoms, and second amendment rights. The House also passed a balanced budget that will fund public education, health care needs, and border security efforts.”

At the local level, Speaker Phelan helped secure tuition reductions and millions of dollars in funding for higher education, which will have a positive impact on Lamar University and Lamar State Colleges.

“I am grateful to my neighbors in Southeast Texas and to my fellow members of the legislature who have placed their trust in me,” said Phelan. “I ask for your support as we work together to position our state for continued growth and prosperity.”

In addition to his duties as Speaker, Phelan works as a real estate developer at his family's fourth-generation commercial real estate development firm, which owns and manages retail, industrial, and office property in Texas and Arkansas. His wife, Kim, is a solo practitioner attorney and together they have four sons, Ford, Mack, Hank, and Luke. He and his family reside together in Southeast Texas, where Speaker Phelan was born and raised.
